Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990005115

Mr. Speaker. several weeks ago I returned from a trip to the Soviet Union. While there I had the opportunity to meet with Prisoners of Conscience. the socalled refuseniks. whose only crime is the desire to worship God in their own way. These people. most of them Jews who have been refused the right to emigrate to Israel. are routinely persecuted by Soviet authorities seeking to stamp out all traces of organized religion. They have been battered physically and emotionally and fired from their jobs. In some cases. after having been followed and harassed for years. they have been murdered.
