Mr. Chairman. the plight of Soviet Jews Is at a critical stage with Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union at the lowest level in over 10 years. In addition. we are now witnessing violent attacks against Refuseniks and increased harassment of those seeking to establish and maintain contact with the Soviet Jewish population. I am proud to stand with my colleagues today in support of the cause of Soviet Jewry. As a member of the Congressional Coalition on Soviet Jewry. I feel a broad effort is needed to enhance the awareness of the American peopleand the worldof the systematic persecution of the small Jewish population of the Soviet Union.
