Lithuanias independence was crushed in 1940 when it was occupied again by Soviet Armed Forces. It has been controlled by the Soviets ever since. Nonetheless. the Lithuanians indomitable spirit sitl survives as an example of hope to oppressed peoples everywhere. In the 19th century. Lithuanian Immigration to the United States increased substantially due to the oppression under the czarist regime. Many of the social and cultural activities repressed in the homeland found strong expression in America. we in Maryland are fortunate to have a large and active Lithuanian community. prospering as doctors. lawyers. businessmen. teachers. scientists. artists. and technicians. Lithuanians can be proud of their longstanding tradition of selfhelp and voluntarism.
