It is little wonder that these students scored above the 50th percentile of standardized tests. On the other hand. many of the newly established students. or their families. have recently immigrated to the United States to escape severe economic. political. or social crises of their native homelands. These students. for. the most part. have been forced to deal with the realities of social injustice. war. and poverty. They were unable. through no fault of their own. to become academically proficient in their native tongue.
