Now the advances of medical science have made the detection and treatment of this horrible disease a comparatively simple process. However. I am greatly saddened to report that TB still plagues this Nation. especially in urban areas experiencing a large influx of refugees. For instance Miami. the focal point for many immigrants from the Caribbean and Central America. has a tuberculosis rate six times greater than the national average. Cities such as Miami badly need funds to contain these virulent outbreaks. and I hope that the $27 million allocated for this purpose will be sufficient to achieve this important goal. Thankfully. some results are already being produced.
