Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980258457

Mart Niklus has literally put his life on the line for human rights. Now he faces his 50th birthday dangerously ill and in solitary confinement in Chistopol Prison. It is my hope that by sending this scroll we can send him a bit of encouragment and boost his morale as he faces the inhumane conditions of his confinement. On April 13 of this year. I wrote Soviet Chairman Chernenko and requested that he review this case and see that Mr. Niklus received proper medical attention. I also asked that Mart Niklus be released from imprisonment and permitted to emigrate to the country of his choice. Sweden. Of course.
