Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980221051

The Yakirs have fluency in English and Hebrew. As we all know. the Soviets frequently attempt to draft young male refuseniks. thus effectively detaining them for 7 years on the grounds of army secrets. The Soviet Unions case against the Yakirs in denying them permission to emigrate is itself a flagrant and deplorable violation of the Helsinki Accords. which the Soviets have signed. The further harassment and outrageous arrest of Alexander must not go unnoticed. I urge the Soviet Union. in the strongest possible terms. to release Alexander and to allow the Yakir family to emigrate. and to end the brutal harassment of Jews living in the Soviet Union.*
