Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980219372

I have the highest and fondest respect for my friend. the gentleman from Florida. a very distinguished member of our subcommittee. but if the gentlemans amendment were to pass. it would jeopardize the future of our bill. We have spent 7 days of the hardest work we have done perhaps in years. and I would hope that we would not jeopardize the future activity of the bill by adopting the gentlemans amendment. Simply stated. the President of the United States in a press conference last Thursday night indicated that he felt legalization was a component part of immigration reform. The Attorney General has suggested the very same thing. Legalization is an important component part of any practical immigration reform program. If this amendment to strike legalization were to pass. it would seriously unbalance the bill. It would render it devoid of the balance and of the sensitivity and symmetry we think it must have to be good. genuine law.
