Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980217600

I thank the gentleman for yielding to me. Mr. Chairman. I would like to point out to the gentleman from Massachusetts that we now have in the existing law a provision that the Attorney General. if a person has been here for not less than 7 years. has a right to suspend any deportation proceedings if that person can prove that by taking him or her out of the United States it will be a hardship on that person. or. it might be a hardship on their family. Now. if we could. allow the Attorney General and give him absolute authority. to allow people to stay here who have been here not less than 7 years. under certain circumstances would it not make for a better citizenry rather than just allowing everybody who came here after a certain period of time. to be given certain rights of citizenship?
