Nine were sentenced to prison terms and the other two were to be executed. Those sentenced to death elicited a world protest which prompted a congressional response. The pressure placed by these organizations enabled their prison sentences to be reduced to 15 years special regime. the harshest form of prison punishment. These 11 individuals. frustrated with the human rights situation in the Soviet Union. were simply trying to practice their religious and cultural freedom. and to be allowed to emigrate. As a result of a cooperative effort from Congress and other concerned bodies worldwide. all but two prisoners have been released. One of the two prisoners.
