Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980214418

Mr. Chairman. that needs to be clarified. because it is a very. very dangerous process if we are allowing local law enforcement at any level to enforce immigration law. Right now I understand that in Texas they have been sued for civil rights violations for stopping people on the street. But I assure the Members that. under the guise of immigration reform. if we adopt the bill and it allows for local law enforcement to enforce immigration law. a Member of Congress from the 15th District of Texas would not be able to go in blue jeans and a plaid shirt on a bus from here to Mission. TX. without being stopped. I would say. 15 to 20 times and having to identify himself beyond the norm.
