I thank the gentleman for yielding. I have not been as emotionally involved in this debate as some of our colleagues. but I am struck by the remarks of the gentleman from Texas because it verifies the situation that I encounter in my own district. and I think we should realize the complexity of this situation and the variations that exist throughout the United States. In California we are all aware of the dependence of much of our agriculture on undocumented aliens. and we have heard here. as the gentleman from California [Mr. ROYBALI has indicated. about the sweatshop conditions in some of our larger urban areas. My own district is different from either of these. It is not heavily agricultural. it is not a large urban area. but you cannot walk down the main street of any of the small towns in my district and stop in a restaurant or a laundry or a motel without encountering very readily undocumented aliens who are valuable members of the work force there. I have done this frequently. I have engaged in conversation with these people.
