Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980211266

It varies. We went to the Immigration Service to ask them for their suggestions. We found that for people who were identified as U.S. citizens or nationals that 5 years was adequate. because their status is not going to change. For people under the law. under SimpsonMazzoli. who might be declared to be permanent residents. their status could change. so their verification paper is given a life of 3 years. The Attorney General was given flexibility on others. For instance. if workers came in under some legalized program. the verification there would need to be more frequent because of the changing status of the potential worker.
