Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980171767

As young Poles and Frenchmen had come to America to fight for our independence. young Americans went to Greece to help in the struggle for Greek independence. Our history is closely tied not only to the traditions of the ancient Greek citystates. but also to the modern Greek nation which was established at the close of 8 years of bloody warfare. The many Greeks who emigrated to the United States following independence helped to form the ethnic richness and diversity of our country. Greek Americans have made enormous contributions in every area of our national lifein the arts and sciences. business and industry. and political leadership. The strength of America has largely come from the Greeks and other immigrant groups who came to the United States determined to build a new life. The Greek spirit of independence has also been demonstrated in more recent times by the Greeks heroic resistance to Fascist and Nazi invasions during World War II. The Greeks refusal to surrender to the Axis dictatorships ultimately helped to defeat Hit. lers attempt to dominate Europe.
