Sakharov and Yelena Bonner nearly lost their lives in a hunger strike aimed at convincing the Soviet authorities to permit Dr. Sakharovs daughterinlaw. Lisa Alexeyeva. to emigrate to the United States to Join her husband. The Soviets finally yieldedshe was permitted to emigrate and the hunger strike endedfollowing an outpouring of expressions of support and concern from many Americans. including Members of the Senate and the House. and others as well. Subsequently I authored a concurrent resolution calling on the Soviet Government to release Dr. Sakharov from internal exile and to let him and Yelena Bonner freely choose their place of residence.
