Mr. President. today. the eighth anniversary of the arrest of Anatoly Shcharansky. is a most appropriate time to focus once again on the Soviet repression of those who hold dissenting religious and political views and of Soviet refusal to recognize the basic rights of many of their citizens to emigrate. practice religion freely and study their culture. Anatoly Shcharansky. a Jewish activist. was arrested in 1977 and sentenced in 1978 to 13 years in prison and labor camps. He is currently in the Chistopol labor camp some 500 miles from Moscow. Shcharanskys wife. Avital. a resident of Israel. is deeply concerned about her husbands health and has made numerous appeals for his release.
