Because of Anatoly Shcharanskys strength and courage. he has become a symbol for all Soviet Jews and others whose basic fundamental rights are denied by the Soviet authorities. I personally have written letters in the past year on behalf of three Soviet families who. although not behind bars in a Soviet jail. are nonetheless incarcerated in a prison of their own in the Soviet Union. These three families have continuously been denied visas to leave the Soviet Union and have had to endure incidents of oppression. harassment. and in the case of the two Soviet Jewish families. daily antiSemitism. With the change in the leadership in the Soviet Union we must renew our efforts on behalf of Soviet Jews and all others who are under the reign of terror and oppression. I pray that on the eighth anniversary of the arrest of Anatoly Shcharansky. I will be celebrating his release as well as the immigration of the Boris Ghinis family. the Antanas Vausa family. and the Mikhail Kazanovich family. and all those who wish the right of religious freedom and emigration.*
