Speaker. I rise to join with my colleagues in expressing our support and commitment to Soviet Jews in their struggle for freedom. Very few of us in this country ever express the desire to leave. to emigrate to another land. Yet. if we do have this desire. we are free to travel as we wish. In addition. we often take for granted our freedom to practice our religious beliefs. Today we should remember that Jews and other minorities in the Soviet Union are denied these basic rights. The Jews of the Soviet Union are engaged in a daily struggle for survival. The Soviet authorities. in addition to denying Jews the basic right to emigrate. are pursuing a systematic plan to eliminate Jewish culture and religion. The international community must not look the other way. It is our duty as Americans. as a free people. to speak out against the Soviets who deny their citizens the fundamental right to live and worship in accordance with their heritage.
