Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980156494

Mr. Speaker. today I am honored to participate in the commemoration of Lithuanian Independence Day. I am pleased and proud to do so for several reasons. First. as a member of the U.S. Congress. I am proud of the fact that this Nation remains loyal in its recognition of independent Lithuania. Second. as a representative of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I am proud of the tremendous contributions made by Lithuanians over their generations of immigration. In particular. their cultural impact in such centers as Boston. Worcester. and Springfield have left Massachusetts richer. Finally. I want to call attention to the ongoing Soviet policy of systematically suppressing Lithuanian institutions of culture. religion. and language.
