Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980156373

I cosponsored this resolution because I believe the time has come for the Congress to recognize the importance of adequately addressing the needs of our Nations hungry and of the worlds hungry. Mr. Speaker. I think there are important security and economic interests of the United States at stake here. Whatever policy any one of us might advocate with respect to our near neighbors. it is quite clear that the immigration pressure on our borders and the instability and revolutions in Central America stem from poverty and hunger. Contrary to what I have heard spoken this afternoona charge of fragmentation. just the opposite is envisioned by this legislation. I serve as a member of the Select Committee on Children.
