The group held a press conference at the State capitol pressroom in Springfield on December 5. 1983. At that time. the dean and provost of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Dr. Richard H. Moy. announced the appointment of 13 Russian scientists and academicians to adjunct and clinical faculty positions in the university. These 13 individuals are "refuseniks"-people whose requests to emigrate have been denied by Soviet authorities and who are awaiting permission to leave the Soviet Union. I commend both the Springfield Jewish Community Relations Council and the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine for their innovative and important work on behalf of Soviet Jews.
