Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980125105

The Reverend Ian Paisley is able to gain entry into the United States and espouse his views on Northern Ireland. Yet representatives from another important segment of political thought from Northern Ireland are barred from our shores. The Department of Stateno doubt with both the advice and consent of the British Government. has systematically denied visa applications from representatives of the Sinn Fein Political Partya legally sanctioned political party in Irelandand one which participates in elections. It is wrong for the Department of State to impose a gag rule over what the Irish American community in this Nation should be allowed to hear about the tragedy in Northern Ireland. It is nothing more than censorship by visa denial. One does not have to agree with a particular position of a group or organization to advocate for a more equitable visa policy by our Government toward political figures from Northern Ireland. The present policy is an anathema to our democratic process. The American people have a right to hear all sides and with openness there will be truth.
