He secured his passage to America by working as a cabin boy on a steamliner. Once in America he set out for the West. Olaf felt that if he was to truly capture the spirit of Western life he must live. eat. and sleep it. So he worked for several years on the Mexican Border Patrol and as a ranch hand. He also traveled throughout the Old West camping and sketching the Indians there. Olaf was truly intrigued by the beauty of the Old West and he strove to capture the wonder of it by living and working with his subjects.
