While Shcharanskys spiritual strength remains intact. his physical condition has weakened. It is incumbent upon us to appeal persistently for Shcharanskys reunion with his family outside the Soviet Union. It is imperative that we see in this case a reflection of many others. and push for justice in every instance. Particularly at a time that has witnessed a drastic drop in Jewish emigration from Russia accompanied by a corresponding rise in pressure put on Soviet Jews seeking to leave. our words of protest. like those of the Governor and people of New York. must be heard.
