It seems tragic that this was all that was done. but at least it was a. gesture. It would be truly tragic if we learned nothing from these photographs. or from those who attempted to mitigate. in some small way. the undescribable destruction around them. Dr. Vishniac describes a particular family that befriended him. a family that was completely exterminated in the Holocaust. "It had been useless to warn them of the disaster." he says. "They had applied for visas to the United States. but the waiting time was measured in years. and they did not have years." Mr. President. I feel only remorse that some who could have been saved were not.
