I appreciate having this opportunity to join my colleagues in the special order on behalf of the plight of Soviet Jews. As world events in recent weeks have brought worldwide calls for sanctions against the Soviet Government. we must not allow the situation of Soviet Jews to be overshadowed. The deprivation of rights which Soviet Jews endure daily in their country may not have received a great deal of public attention in recent weeks. and it is therefore crucial that we take this opportunity to refocus public awareness on the cruel injustices the Soviet Government imposes upon Jews who seek religious freedom and the right to emigrate. I take this moment to reiterate my deep concern for the situation facing Soviet Jews and to remind the public that the maltreatment of Jews in the Soviet Union has not abated. Our voices must continue to be heard.
