President. there are several aspects of this situation that are as pertinent today as they were in 1944. First. it is reassuring to note that then. as now. the people of America recognized the genocidal slaughter of any group as a barbaric and unspeakable act. Then. as now. our people recognized the existence of certain minimum standards of humanity that every nation should be obligated to meet. Ms. Gruber describes the kind and genorous reception these 982 refugees received from the people of our country. They saw the blatant violation of a peoples basic human rights. and were willing to respond. We must remember. however. that America provided refuge for only a few of the victims.
