Ruth Gruber recently published a book that details a littleknown piece of American history. Ms. Grubers book. entitled "Haven." provides a firsthand account of 982 World War II refugees who were granted temporary sanctuary in the United States after they promised in writing to return to Europe when the war ended. These refugees were fleeing Nazi oppressionseeking to escape historys most terrible act of genocide. In a review of Ms. Grubers book. the New York Times describes this gesture as: ... a token of humanity. no more than a token by the United States. which. while warring against oppressors in World War II. had refused to admit refugees by other than normal. and restrictive. immigration laws. At a time when Adolf Hitler was systematically trying to eliminate an entire race. our Nation saw fit to provide safe haven for a handful. Mr.
