The Chronicle is a testament to the persecutions which the Catholic Church and its members are suffering at the hands of the Soviet authorities in Lithuania. Lithuania. a small. previously independent Baltic State. was forcefully occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940 when Hitler and Stalin signed a pact that divided up Poland and Eastern Europe between them. At the time. 85 percent of Lithuanias population was Roman Catholic. Since that time. the Soviets have moved to destroy the Churchs influence through mass deportation. imprisonment. assassination. intimidation. disinformation. and other deplorable measures. But even though such measures continue today. the Soviets have not been able to break the spirit of these remarkable people. Since 1972.
