Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970200192

The chances of achieving such a settlement would undoubtedly increase if the President would put pressure on Turkey to settle the dispute. On September 26. 1980. candidate Ronald Reagan released a statement on the situation on Cyprus. in which he said: The tragic situation in Cyprus has lasted 6 years. It must not continue. The foreign military forces on that island should be substantially reduced. and the Cypriot refugees. be they Greek or Turkish. should be permitted to return to their homes and land. The tragic situation in Cyprus has now lasted 8 years. House Concurrent Resolution 310 asks the President to get serious about working for a settlement of the situation in Cyprus.
