Mr. Speaker. pride in our diverse ethnic heritages is one of the strong points of American society. The fact that we are a nation which has been enriched by so many different streams of immigration is a source of great strength to us. Recently. one of my former colleagues in the Massachusetts State Legislature. Representative Stephen J. Karol. delivered an eloquent speech on the role of the Portuguese Americans in the United States and. particularly. in southeastern Massachusetts which he represents. Representative Karol also talked of the strong relationships that exist now and have existed between the great democracies of the United States and Portugal and of the great strength which Portugal has shown as an ally of the United States in this difficult time.
