Mr. Speaker. today I join with my colleagues in this House to commemorate what is now the 42d year of the Soviet Unions illegal annexation of the free states of Lithuania. Latvia. and Estonia. The Soviet occupation of these Baltic States in 1940 and the subsequent mass deportations and executions that followed. destroyed their political sovereignty and their national pride. What was once a thriving and prosperous economic region has become yet another unwilling victim of Soviet hegemony. Under the oppressive domination of the Soviets. the free people of the Baltic States have been denied political. religious. and personal freedom.
