Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970188253

While their independence was short lived. the spirit which stood behind it continued. Even in the face of the most overwhelming odds and cruelest circumstances. the people of Estonia. Lithuania. and Latvia have held on to the dream we in this country are able to enjoyfreedom and peace. I join my many colleagues in the House in paying tribute to the thousands of men and women who have suffered deportation and in far too many cases execution at the hands of the Soviet Union. Though they were unable to repell the invader. the oppressor has failed in crushing the spirit of these proud peoples.* a Mr. PEPPER.
