Latvians. and Lithuanians for whom freedom is just a dream. Today. then. we commemorate the 42d anniversary of Genocide Day. pausing to remind the world of the Baltic States ongoing struggle against Soviet oppression. Between June 14 and 17. 1940. the Soviet Union began a tyrannical campaign against the citizens of these Baltic States. invading and occupying them and carrying out mass deportations and executions. Although this Soviet tyranny over Estonia. Latvia. and Lithuania continues today. it has not succeeded in crushing the independent spirit of their citizens. who stubbornly resist the attempted obliteration of their linguistic. ethnic and religious identities.
