In real terms. it would mean a 20percent cutback in staff at an agency that is already strained almost beyond its operational limits. As many as 2.600 jobs would have to be eliminated. 1.800 of them by reductions in force. and 800 by attrition. Among those cut would be 1.200 inspectors. 260 import specialists. and 100 border patrol staff. all of whom play critical roles in guarding against the smuggling of dangerous drugs and the entry of other illegal goods into the United States. Considering the size of the customs workload. we can illafford cuts of the magnitude sought in the Frenzel amendment. Last year alone. customs staff cleared more than 314 million people entering the United States and more than 96.4 million vehicles. vessels.and aircraft.
