Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970175345

I want to take the opportunity today to remember two of the thousands of refuseniks still waiting for their freedom in the Soviet Union. Today is the 61st birthday of Andrei Sakharov and the 52d birthday of Lev Blitshtein. Andrei Sakharov. a man whose name is well known in the United States and throughout the world. a Nobel Laureate physicist. and one of the most outspoken human rights activists in the Soviet Union. is still waiting for Soviet authorities to allow him to emigrate. His hunger strike last year brought the tragedy of Soviet refuseniks closer to us. and the outrage and protest of government leaders and the public put pressure on the Soviet Government to allow Dr. Sakharovs daughterinlaw to be reunited with her husband here in the United States.
