It is unrealistic to think that. if we freeze our law enforcement spending. then criminals will freeze their activities at this years level. They will not. because freezing our spending translates into laying people off. thereby making things easier for criminals. Besides. this Nations crime problems are serious enough today. at current levels. I am committed to doing something to help fight crime and drug abuse. and to getting a more effective immigration policy in place. I believe that my colleagues share in that concern. The key to showing that we are determined to do something about these problems however. is to make sure our law enforcement agencies have the tools to do the job.
