Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970161589

It is hard for those of us who live in this country to imagine the emotional and psychological suffering of longterm refuseniks such as Isak. Separated from his family. harassed by Soviet officials. and isolated socially. Isak is but one of many victims of the Soviet Unions inhumane. antiSemitic policies toward emigration and cultural expression. I urge my colleagues to speak out. in a loud and clear voice. against the deplorable treatment of Soviet Jews. The courageous fight of Isak Shkolnik and thousands of other Jewish refuseniksa fight to retain their dignity and to resist the conformist pressures of the Soviet statedeserves our respect and our utmost support.*
