Benedict Scotts only "crime" was to expect the Soviet Government to live up to its obligations under the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (the Helsinki accords). His activities in supporting the work of Lithuanian national and religious movements by assisting the Catholic Committee for the Defense of Believers Rights in Lithuania and in joining the Lithuanian Helsinki Group can only be regarded as crimes in a system that has no respect for truth and freedom. I strongly support House Resolution 200. which expresses the sense of the House that the President should inform the Soviet Government of the opposition of the United States to the unjust imprisonment of Benedict Scott. and that the President should take every appropriate action to secure the release from prison of this American citizen so he will be allowed to emigrate to the country of his choice. Mr. Speaker.
