Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970157375

This year marks the eighth anniversary of the brutal invasi )n of Cyprus by Turkish Armed Forces. and our Nation must continue to stand tirm in its condemnation of this tragic agiression. Turkey has established a colony on 40 percent of the island of Cyprus which contains the islands most productive land and 70 percent of its national resources. Some 200.000 men. women. and children. more than onethird of the entire Cypriot population. remain refugees in their own country. I have voted against financial assistance to Turkey in the past because of its continued aggression and human rights violations in Cyprus. and I join my colleagues in urging the administration to withdraw its request to Congress for additional increases in assistance to Turkey. The Hellenic American League. located in the 11th district I am honored to represent. recently wrote to me regarding the continuing crisis in Cyprus. and I contacted the Department of State on the Leagues behalf.
