Currently. the presence of approximately 30.000 Turkish troops is creating a strain on the Cypriot economy and. simultaneously. resulting in the persecution of the Greek Cypriot population. The 1974 invasion hurt the islands economy and contributed to a ruinous unemployment rate. Immediately following Turkish intervention. Cyprus Joblessness rate jumped to 25 percent. The economic situation has become further aggravated by a severe housing shortage among the islands refugees. Presence of Turkish troops has not only resulted in a geographical political division of Cyprus. it has also served as an instrument of repression against the Greek Cypriots.
