Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970157181

President. I support todays efforts in the House of Representatives to commemorate the nation of Cyprus by declaring April 22 as "Cyprus Day." Congressmen YATRON and BROOMFIELD have called for a special order to address the need for a prompt and Just settlement to the conflict in Cyprus. and to bring the special nature of the Cyprus problem to open debate on the House floor. Since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. over 200.000 Greek Cypriots live as refugees in their own country. another 2.000 are listed as missing persons. Turkish military forces continue to occupy the island at an enormous cost to the Government of Turkey. This situation is a strong deterrent to any solution which may otherwise be reached.
