Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970157180

Mr. President. during this. National Library Week. I call upon my colleagues to pause and recognize the invaluable role of public libraries in the growth and development of this country. The benefits of public libraries are reaped by all. In recent years our public libraries have extended their services to the physically handicapped. the institutionalized. and even the immigrant who speaks little or no English at all. In New York State alone people will borrow more than 80 million books this year from public libraries. Public libraries are the cornerstone of our democracy. They guarantee free access to knowledge and information to all of our peoples.
