There have been more serious social cleavages according to region. class. ethnic affiliation. or generation partly be. cause the United States has undergone rapid growth while absorbing waves of immigrants from every corner of the globe. Furthermore. If. as I have suggested. the source of violence lies at the very heart of American values. a reduction in violence will not result from limiting access to the means of violence alone.
