Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970140965

Febuary 24. 1982. marks the 64th anniversary of the declaration of inde. pendence of the Republic of Estonia. yet Estonians do not enjoy even the most basic of human rights. Since 1940. when the Soviet Union forcibly February 24. IN82 annexed Estonia. this unfortunate nation has been subject to the economic and political exploitation of Moscow. The Sovietimposed rule has brought with it untold sufferings: Arrests. deportations. and executions. as well as the socalled nationalization of all private property and the downgrading of social and working conditions. But. above all. fundamental freedoms have been virtually abolished. The United States has never recognized the unlawful domination and annexation of Estonia by the Soviet Union.
