Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970135136

The purpose of social security is to provide a retirement benefit to assure that the elderly who live in our country can live with dignity. Many foreigners. because of the lower standard of living in their mother country. can live in comparative luxury by going home and collecting social security benefits. I believe that it is a vital first step to the recovery of the social security system to remove from eligibility those noncitizens who live and work in the United States temporarily and then return to their homelands. no longer to support and produce in the United States. only to drain the social security system of benefits for our elderly. The General Accounting Office has estimated that this measure could save as much as $700 million a year. The bill pays back to those people what they have paid into the system. but no more.
