Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970129746

But as a matter of principle. I would like to see the committee figures. figures contained in this bill. be retained as evidence of good faith and appreciation of what the Coast Guard is doing. and contrary to some criticism I have heard here on the floor this afternoon. I am one of those who happens to think the Coast Guard does an outstanding job 24 hours around the clock in many cases in search and rescue. the foreign refugee responsibilities. the 200mile fishing limit. and on and on. All of these are duties. my friends. we have added to the Coast Guard in the last few years. At the same time. it is my opinion that the appropriations allowed or approved have not kept pace in any degree with the responsibilities we have handed to them.
