First established in 1881. this elementary school moved a few years later to its present site. which was then called Cottage Street. In 1914 the school took its name after Charles W. Elliott. past president of Harvard University. Not long after that the street was named after its most important buildinga place of fundamental learning which helped to educate the children of Irish. Italian and more recently Hispanic immigrants. As its role has changed several times over the yearsat one time it functioned as a center for visually impaired children. and then it became a school of musicit has remained a place of steady enlightenment for generations of Newarkers.
