Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970119041

One member of the group committed suicide after it was reported that he was continually harassed. Many of us in Congress sent a letter to Ambassador Dobrynin expressing our distress at this situation and urgently requesting that the imprisoned members be released. Mr. Speaker. as was pointed out to me by the Congress of RussianAmericans. Inc.. the words "Russian" and "Soviet" are not synonymous and the Russian immigrants in the United States warn us of the dangers of totalitarian regimes. It is my earnest hope that one day we will not have to call for human rights for individuals. because that goal will have been attained. Sadly. history presents no reason for optimism.
