Speech #970094523

Speaker. it is fitting that we honor the memory of the heroic efforts of the Hungarian people. 25 years ago. to challenge the Soviet military forces of occupation in Hungary. The October 1956 uprising exacted a heavy price from the Hungarian people. Indeed we have amongst us now. many citizens whose immigration to the United States stemmed from that momentous event. Those who joined in that heroic effort can take great satisfaction today that some of the goals of that urpising have been realized through a gradual liberalization process which is the envy of many other Eastern European nations. The deep longing for freedom and the fruits of liberty is very evident throughout Eastern Europe today.
